51 D Class 4-4-0 locomotives were built between February 1901 and March 1907 during the Wainwright period by the South Eastern & Chatham Railway

The fifty locomotives of the 7400 class were not auto-train fitted and had higher boiler pressure

In this role the class continued in service until the 1960’s with the final active locomotive being decommissioned on the Hayling Island Line in Hampshire on November 1963
