It is a long egyptian cotton therefore the 2 ply. It is strong enough for piecing as well as machine quilting. You will be amazed at how much longer you can sew without changing the bobbin of this thread. You will also find there is less lint. Each spool has 1422 yds of thread. Mint Ice
